My grandfather, part 5
by Dr. Ram Sharma
I know when I was a child, my grandfather fulfilled my spiritual desire and that was truly a miracle. I was always very fond of the scent of his pens. He asked me whether I wanted these things and then he would put his hands in his bag and took out a gift for me--the pens were the most costly as those were not available in my village at all. These pens and his little loving gifted things, I still treasure these even to this very day.
My grandfather used to tell me the details of his pilgrimage to Badrinath (Uttarakhand). He would tell me that the land of Uttarkhand is so very pure and it has so many invisible saints who are ever here and continuously they will remain so meditating here. Those great sould are visible to saints only. He told me how he took many baths in Sahastra Dhara at Badrinath-- and how cold this water was too--yet there he would meditate the whole day. Around evening time one night, a saint came to him who had covered his body in ash, and he wore many rudraksha bead rosaries.
The dear saint took my grandfather to a nearby care where there was a large banyan tree just outside of it. It was one of the largest he had ever seen too. This tree was so thick with leaves that no light or rain could ever come under it. There was such heat though under that tree. My grandfather meditated there for an entire week. That great saint also gave him some leaves to eat and by eating then, grandfather experienced no hunger or thirst that entire week. There was pure cool water nearby, but they did not even drink. After one week, that great saint took my grandfather deep into the nearby cave. There was a large stone upon its gate which the saint moved aside in order to even enter the cave. Both of them went within and there inside, they came through a narrow tunnel that was almost four to five kilometers long. Both of them reached to a place where my grandfather saw many great saints meditating as they appeared with their ash smeared bodies.
The great saint told my grandfather that those whom he sees there meditating have been there for thousands of years. While inside of there, grandfather felt such an unearthly divine peace inside. The saint told him that no human being from this age can ever go inside there and stay for long. And, if anyone should enter there, he must return outside immediately. I, too, was fueled by his deep reverance of devotion within. He spoke intimately with me about this place of his soul's serenity of refined care inside of his heart.
My grandfather used to meditate by burning a fire each summer for forty days. this was Tapasya he used to do this in such a spiritual manner for the healing welfare of all people. SARVE BHANTU SUKHINAH-- ALL SHOULD BE HAPPY was ever his heart's devotion of care. He had such a peaceful aura that so many diseases used to disappear from those who came before him. His voice was always so full of peace, love and sympathy for all things and for those who came to him for relief of their problems and diseases. His life gave all such great examples of unconditional love.
Heart's salute to my grandfather!
